They arrived at the service center a short time later. The detective pulled in right after them and scowled when he saw Guin.

“What are you doing here?” he growled.

“It’s my car,” Guin retorted.

The detective continued to scowl but didn’t say anything when Guin followed him. (Shelly stayed by her car.)

“Detective O’Loughlin, what can we do for you?”

“I want to see the lady’s car.”

“Sure thing,” said the mechanic.

He led the detective to an area over to the side where the Mini was parked. The detective squatted down and took a look at the deflated tire.

“Any other damage?” he asked the mechanic.

“Nope. Just the tire. She’s a lucky lady. That bullet we found could’ve done some serious damage.”

“May I see it?”

“It’s in the office.”

The detective followed the mechanic to the office, with Guin trailing behind. The mechanic opened the top drawer of the desk and pulled out a rag. Inside was the bullet. It was the biggest bullet Guin had ever seen. Not that she had seen many bullets.

The detective eyed the bullet, then rewrapped it and placed it in an evidence bag.

“You need anything else, detective?” asked the mechanic.

“I’m good,” he replied. Then he turned and left.

“Hey!” called Guin, running after him.

The detective stopped.

“Will you tell me what you find out?”

The detective looked at her.

“I told you to stay out of this.”

“I can’t do that.”

The two of them stood facing each other, next to the detective’s car.

Then the detective got in and drove away.

“The nerve of him!” Guin said to Shelly.

Shelly shook her head.

“What is it with you two?”

“Nothing,” said Guin, not wanting to discuss the detective.

“It didn’t look like nothing.”

“Yeah, well,” said Guin.

“Come on, let’s go,” said Shelly. “You want to come back to my place or should I take you home?”

“Would you mind driving me back to my place?”

“No problem.”

Guin took a few steps toward the Mini. It looked so forlorn, sitting there off to the side, tilting to the right.

“I’ll see you soon, old friend!” she called.

The mechanic stepped outside.

“Take good care of my baby!” Guin said to him.

He gave her a thumbs-up. Then Guin turned and headed back to Shelly’s car.
